Essential Tips To Keep Kid Chefs Safe
As some kids may be blessed with green thumbs and work their way through making an Eden in mom's garden, there are also a gifted few that are considered to be a whiz in the kitchen. The little tikes can start putting their talents to good use by helping mom in meal preparations as early as when they turn three years of age.
As gifted and brilliant these little chefs seem to be, parents should remember that they are still children. They are inexperienced and immature and have yet to develop their wits, senses and utilities. This means that if unattended these little boys and girls can bring a lot of havoc in the kitchen and even hurt themselves in the process. Thus, the reason that parents must always be alert when they have kids working in the kitchen. And even if some recipes are said to be simple, trouble free and child friendly, mom and dads should do well to supervise and be alert to their children's every move in the kitchen. Here are some important points that parents should remember when dealing with young chefs.
* Keep children away from dangerous and unsafe kitchen tools such as knives, hot ovens and pots with boiling water. Children can easily get cut and sliced when they handle sharp knives, blades and even razor-sharp scissors. If the recipe calls for slicing and grazing some ingredients, this must be done by the adult and not the children. Also keep your kid from touching the oven or cooking pots especially when they are in use. Instill in your children the habit of using pot holders when holding warm pots and pans.
* Train your children to be hygienic and sanitary especially when working inside the kitchen. Make it a point to always wash your hands thoroughly before handling any food item and washing them after as well. Also washing hands is required after one cleans the kitchen area, sweeps the kitchen floor or even putting your hair into a ponytail. Dirt can easily be obtained through any of these activities.
Children should also be taught to turn or move away from food each time they feel the need to sneeze or get into a cough. When this happens, they should be able to cover their nose and their mouth with a handkerchief or their hands to keep infection away from the food that is prepared. Again, do not forget to wash hands immediately after. Make use of paper towels to dry hands on right after washing them. Some recipes may include shaping foods either with some culinary molds or with just bare hands. Advise children to not lick their hands during this process to again maintain cleanliness in food preparation.
* Always turn everything off after use. Children who become too excited to taste their own creations would most likely forget to turn off the kitchen devices before leaving them. An adult should do well to finish this task. Unused perishable food should be returned or placed in the refrigerator for proper storage. They will easily become spoiled if they are left unattended on top of the kitchen counter.
